Options After High School
Over the years, I have celebrated high school graduations for all five of my children. And, since raising my two grandchildren for the last six years, I recently celebrated my grandson’s high school graduation. After all of his challenges, his was a huge thrill!
After high school graduation, four out of five of my children had immediate plans to continue their education. They all earned degrees and since then have earned advanced degrees. One of my proudest moments!
However, one of my daughter’s options after high school was to travel, which she did.
She traveled for several years. She backpacked abroad to various countries and traveled to over 40+ U.S. states. After her traveling years, she decided to return home and get an education.
She was ready to focus on her education and set herself on a learning path. Since then, she has earned four college and advanced degrees. Again, I’m such a proud momma!
My experience is not unique. The truth is parents never really know what lies ahead in their children’s futures. Our job as parents is to sit back and provide as much support and encouragement as we can and let your children take the lead!!
You may be surprised how much they can truly accomplish when they have the chance! Be sure to help your children understand their options after high school graduation so they can decide which direction in life is best for them!
Providing Guidance & Options After High School Graduation
Making plans after high school graduation can be very scary. Here are six great ideas and options after high school graduation.
Most 17- or 18-year-olds have NO idea what they want to “do” or “be” for the rest of their lives. How could you?
It can be nerve-wracking for high school graduates and parents to decide what direction or plan they want to follow. Or what road is best for them to take?
These decisions do not come easily to most high schoolers. Trying to figure out plans after high school graduation is generally filled with more questions than answers. And, young adults need guidance and support from parents, grandparents, and academic staff.
Making Commitments
High School graduates should be provided with all options before making a commitment. Also, parents should allow the graduate to decide what is best for their future and NOT for the parent or grandparent.
As stated, graduating students need guidance, but should not feel manipulated into doing something they do not feel comfortable or confident doing.
Planning for college or furthering one’s education is a wonderful direction for a high school graduate’s future. College is an incredible journey for high school graduates to experience.
Living in a college environment allows students to understand the importance of time- management, independence, and responsibility.
Students commuting to a college campus also learn these important values. Furthering one’s education either through college or other educational programs is so important. Educational experiences provide learning about yourself and your personal strengths and weaknesses.

Alternative Options After High School Graduation
However, college may not always be the best direction for all high school graduates. There are many other options after high school that graduates may be interested in exploring.
High School Graduates can find opportunities to become successful adults in numerous other areas.
For example, here are 6 alternative options after high school graduation you should consider:
1. Taking a Gap Year
A gap year is generally a “break” year after your high school graduation. This time gives new graduates an opportunity to reflect and establish what career path they’d like to pursue.
A gap year allows high school graduates a period of time to gather additional knowledge through independent experiences before entering college.
Also, taking a gap year permits time to learn additional desired skills. A gap year has shown to be beneficial for students who are not quite ready to pursue the work force or further their education.

2. Traveling
Many high school graduates have spent several years working part-time and saving money. After graduation, they may feel it is time to be adventurous and expand their travel opportunities.
Graduating high school students may choose to travel independently or in a group.
Traveling is a valuable experience that could be limited by other life commitments.
Therefore, traveling after graduating from high school may be a practical goal to take before deciding on other responsibilities.

Working as an intern allows graduates insight into companies or businesses without fully committing to that industry.

Military recruits are given basic pay for their service. They also receive accommodations, uniforms, and medical benefits free of charge. While in the military you will learn valuable skills. Travel is often an exciting part of the military experience.
College tuition is also paid for those in the military interested in pursuing additional education. Additionally, paid college benefits are applied after time served in the military.
Joining the military should be discussed with family members, but it can be a great option for young men and women who are unsure of their life’s direction. Time spent in the military is a learning and maturing experience for everyone.

- While your child is still in High School, help them schedule PSATs and SATs in preparation for graduation.
- These exams can usually be scheduled through your child’s high school. PSATs and SATs are beneficial to take, even if your child is not planning to immediately attend college.
- Provide support for filling out the FASFA, Free Application for Federal Student Aid, and other financial aid papers and applications for colleges.
- The FASFA is required for all student aid and can be difficult to complete without parental information.
- Discuss various options with your high school graduate.
- Understanding there are alternative options is important for graduates to be aware of.
- Be sure to listen and follow your graduate’s preferences for their future, not yours!
- Continue to provide guidance for your high school graduate after graduation.
- The years between high school and adulthood can be challenging for many kids.
- Don’t expect them to completely let go without some structure and guidance.
- Celebrate their accomplishments! High School can be a challenging time for teenagers both academically and socially.
