This post is about the Basic Needs of a Child Moving into a New Environment.

What are the basic needs of a child? Understanding a child’s basic needs is not always as predictable as you might think. What do children really need to succeed and thrive?

Unfortunately, life is not easy for all children. Many children grow up in tumultuous households without structure and necessities. Often the simplest basic needs of a child are common sense, such as security, shelter, food, and appropriate clothing are not met.

Typically, parents want to provide the basic needs of a child, including love, happiness, affection, understanding and strength. Parents hope their children are safe and stable individuals who are kind and caring people. These characteristics are what all parents aim for in their children.

Mostly, parents want to provide for their children, even if they face financial hardships. But at times, parents are unable to provide the necessary basic needs of a child, therefore, the children may suffer from the lack of essentials.

If children are not getting their basic needs met, it is in the best interest of the child to find placement in a home or environment who can provide for them. Perhaps, in a temporary situation such as a foster home, or with a family member.

Plan Ahead Before Shopping

Be sure to plan ahead for your purchases and make sure the children feel comfortable wearing the items you buy. You don’t want to embarrass or create stress in a child or force them to wear something they do not want to wear. Some children may already have personal insecurities, so it’s important you help them feel confident and safe.

In addition, some children may have issues with specific materials or clothing types. Children on the autism spectrum find it extremely difficult to have tags on their clothing. Even zippers can be challenging for certain children.

Be mindful of children’s particulars quirks and idiosyncrasies before investing too much money. It is best to include the children before making purchases for them. Really, asking the children for their opinion prior to shopping is best.

The basic needs of a child are easy to discover, especially if you include the child in the conversation.

Shopping Mistakes

Looking for some basic needs of a child, you may notice some are more particular than others. Specific items may be more difficult to purchase than others. For instance, shoes can be a very individual choice.

Some children refuse to wear certain styles of shoes because of comfort. My granddaughter cried when I bought her flip flops and sandals with a thong between her toes. She HATED (still hates) anything between her toes, so I had to return most of the summer shoes I thought were perfect! After that I brought her with me to try on slip on sandals and sneakers before buying any shoes.

In addition, my grandson would ONLY wear sneakers. Even in the summer he only wears sneakers! He’s also VERY particular to what type of sneakers he’ll wear. Due to his autism, he’s very sensitive to certain materials.

He is also extremely cautious about how his sneakers fit, the laces, the color, etc. In order to avoid conflict, I include him in all of my shopping decisions so I don’t waste time and money on purchases he refuses to wear.

So, in providing basic needs of a child, there are a variety of personal and specific items, in addition to other emotional needs. Of course and most importantly, love, safety, security, shelter and food are the most essential basics. These principle basic needs, along with other items will keep your child happy, healthy and thriving throughout their childhood.

TIP, IDEAS & SUGGESTIONS FOR 5+ BASIC NEEDS OF A CHILD MOVING INTO A NEW HOME

  • Be sure to include your child before making purchases. Children may have specific idiosyncrasies you are not aware of, but should be considered before purchases.
  • Shopping needs can be very expensive. Consider shopping at outlets or retail stores for discount items. Also, if possible, shop out-of-season for sale items.
  • One of the basic needs of a child is space. Consider where you plan to store new clothing and items. You may need to purchase a new dresser or organizer for your child’s room.
  • Plan ahead! Make lists of the primary items your child needs before you go shopping. You may not need everything all at once!
  • DON’T GO OVERBOARD! Again, planning ahead can help control the volume of purchases you buy. Only purchase what is needed at the time or what is on sale for the upcoming season.
