Learning the Importance of Being a Grandparent

Hi, I’m MomMom. Here’s a little bit About Me!

raising grandkids: MomMom

Meet MomMom, a mother of five and grandmother of six who shares real-life experience, practical advice, resources, and encouragement for parents and grandparents raising grandkids.

In my 50s, after raising five children of my own, I finally found myself stepping into a new season of life. My husband and I were enjoying our careers, settling into a quieter home, and beginning to feel a sense of freedom we hadn’t experienced in decades.

All of our children were grown and living on their own, and for the first time in a long time, life felt… calm.

Then, life threw us a curveball.

We suddenly found ourselves opening our home—and our hearts—in a much bigger way than we ever expected.

Our two oldest grandchildren were moving in with us.

It wasn’t something we had planned for, and to be honest, we weren’t fully prepared for what lay ahead.

Everything changed overnight.

The routines we had just settled into shifted. The quiet was replaced with noise, laughter, challenges, and responsibility.

We were parenting again—only this time, with more life experience, a little more patience, and a whole lot of love.

And while the transition wasn’t always easy, it didn’t take long for us to realize something incredibly important…

We wouldn’t change it for the world.

We love our grandchildren with all of our hearts. Watching them grow, learn, and feel safe in our home has become one of the greatest blessings of our lives.

What started as an unexpected turn has become a deeply meaningful journey—one filled with both challenges and incredible joy.

What Raising My Grandchildren Has Taught Me

This experience has taught me so much about resilience, unconditional love, patience, and the importance of being present.

It has also taught me that becoming a grandparent doesn’t always mean simply stepping into the traditional role of spoiling your grandchildren, enjoying visits, and sending them home.

Sometimes being a grandparent means becoming the person they depend on every single day.

It can mean learning how to parent again.

It can mean navigating schools, behavioral challenges, developmental differences, family relationships, custody and visitation, and the many unexpected responsibilities that come with raising children.

It can mean learning things you never imagined you’d need to know.

And sometimes, it means simply being the safe, steady person a child needs when their world has changed.

I’ve learned that even after raising five children, I don’t have all the answers.

Every child is different.

Every family is different.

And what worked when I was raising my own children doesn’t necessarily work with my grandchildren.

I’ve had to learn, adapt, ask questions, research, make mistakes, and try again.

And I’m still learning.

Why I Created RaisingGrandkids.com

I created RaisingGrandkids.com because I know how overwhelming it can feel when you’re suddenly responsible for raising a child and don’t know where to turn.

There have been plenty of moments when I’ve needed information, reassurance, ideas, or simply the reminder that someone else understands what I’m going through.

I wanted to create a place where parents and grandparents could find practical information, helpful resources, encouragement, and real-life perspectives about the challenges that come with raising children.

RaisingGrandkids.com brings together the things I’ve learned through my own experiences, along with information I’ve researched and resources I’ve found helpful along the way.

I’m not here because I have every answer.

I’m here because I’ve lived some of these challenges, I’m still learning, and I know how valuable it can be to have someone say:

“You’re not alone.”

If something I’ve experienced, learned, or shared can make another parent’s or grandparent’s journey a little easier, then sharing it is worthwhile.

My own experience of raising grandchildren began here in the United States, but families raising children and grandchildren face challenges in communities all around the world.

Different countries have different cultures, family structures, school systems, healthcare services, laws, and support programs. However, many of the questions and emotions are universal.

How do I help this child feel safe?

How do I handle difficult behavior?

How do I navigate school?

How do I support a child who learns or experiences the world differently?

How do I take care of everyone while remembering to take care of myself?

And perhaps the biggest question of all:

Am I doing enough?

RaisingGrandkids.com is intended to be a welcoming online resource for parents and grandparents raising children wherever they live.

As the website continues to grow, I hope to provide more resources and information that can help families find appropriate support within their own communities and countries.

From My Family to Yours

If you’re here because you’re raising a grandchild, supporting a family member, navigating an unexpected change in your family, or simply trying to be the best grandparent you can be, I want you to know something:

You’re not alone.

There may be days when you feel confident and days when you wonder if you’re doing anything right.

I’ve had those days, too.

Raising grandchildren has taught me that being a grandparent isn’t always about the traditional picture we imagined.

Sometimes it’s about being the person who stays.

The person who listens.

The person who advocates.

The person who provides stability when life feels uncertain.

And sometimes, it’s simply about opening your home and your heart when a child needs you most.

This journey wasn’t the one my husband and I planned.

But it has become one of the most meaningful journeys of our lives.

I wouldn’t change it for the world.

If you’re on a similar journey, I hope you’ll find something here that makes your day a little easier, gives you an answer when you need one, or simply reminds you that someone understands.

Welcome to RaisingGrandkids.com.

I’m MomMom, and I’m glad you’re here. ❤️
